Introduction

Welcome to Queenda, the first Greek-speaking theatre club based in Utrecht. Here, we gather to play, express ourselves, and create.

We believe that free expression, with no language filters, is essential for a meaningful engagement with the role, the text, and the group. That's why we created Queenda - so that Greeks in the Netherlands can experience theater in their native tongue. Our goal is to co-create a space where we all feel included, regardless of our expat identity. Our mission is to foster connection with ourselves and our community through theatrical creation.

Foundational pillars

At Queenda we believe that every theatrical encounter must begin with respect towards ourselves, each other and the process.

We embrace diversity and build a space that supports inclusion in all its manifestations.

The visibility and acceptance of queer identities is an integral part of our identity.

We approach the stories of all participants with humbleness and an open mind.

We trust that what is shared within the group is not at risk of being shared with others.

We understand consistency and accountability as key concepts for a healthy collective process.

We foster dialogue and promote collective decision making, with the aim of a horizontal mode of working.

Who we address

Queenda is open to Greek-speaking residents of the Netherlands, regardless of age, gender, or previous theater experience. Whether you are driven by entertainment, creativity, the need for contact, a personal quest or a love of learning, you are welcome!

Description

The first cycle of Queenda will run during the academic year 2025-2026 and will be divided into two parts. The first part (October - January) is titled "exploration" and the second part (February - June) "creation."

During the "exploration" phase, participants will engage with four different theatrical works from different playwrights, genres, and time periods. Through the study of these works, we will get to try different acting methods, theatrical forms, as well as movement and voice exercises. Combining theory, practice, and experimentation, we will examine the works in relation to their context, our own context, and ourselves. "Exploration," therefore, does not aim at the academic - from a distance - study of these theatrical works, but at using them as a "lens" to dive deeper into the theory and practice of theatre. Through this process, we explore not only the times and contexts of the plays, but also our own selves - as shaped within the contexts, conditions and situations of then and now.

At the beginning of the second part, the group will decide which one of the previously explored plays they wish to stage. This decision will mark the point of departure for the creation of the final performance. "Creation," then, refers to the core process of building the performance: developing an artistic vision, assigning roles, defining directorial and dramaturgical choices, rehearsals, costuming, and production.

Note: Participating in the final performance is not mandatory. Participants may focus on other components of "creation," such as writing/textual adaptation, costuming, or artistic assistance. However, to participate in the club, you need to fully attend both parts of the cycle - it is not possible to only attend one.

1st cycle
1st cycle 2025-2026: Syllabus

The first cycle of Queenda is titled "What unites us". It is about trying to understand and express the common experiences that shape our identity as people living between homelands, histories and cultures. This in-between state, full of contradictions and transitions, will be the domain in which we will work creatively in this cycle.

Through the exploration of four selected plays, participants will approach different forms of expression, collaborate and gradually steer towards the creation of a performance to be presented at the end of the cycle.

Meetings will take place on a regular weekly basis and each meeting will last three hours. Queenda will consist of two groups, one on Friday and another on Saturday. The theatre experience offered combines experiential learning, physical expression, text analysis and collaborative creation.

Open Session

Those interested will have the opportunity to attend a free Open Session in early August. It will be a chance to get to know each other through theatrical play and to share more information about Queenda's first cycle. Participation in the Open Session is not mandatory to join the group. Likewise, attending the Open Session does not automatically mean joining the group. It’s simply an invitation to meet and it's open to everyone!

All details about the Open Session will be announced in the coming few days.
